Felice Ficherelli

Felice Ficherelli

Felice Ficherelli (1605 - 1660) was an Italian painter of the Baroque period, active mainly in Tuscany. Born in San Gimignano. He was the pupil of the painter Jacopo da Empoli. Ficherelli's early works were canvases for Partrons, such as Conte Bardi who persuaded Felice to move to Florence and to study with Empoli, resulting in the sumptous fabrics we see in many of Ficherelli's works. Nicknamed "Felice Riposo", this derives from Ficherelli's retiring nature

There is controversial copy of Ficherelli's "Saint Praxidis", which appears to be signed by Johannes Vermeer and dated 1655. [Liedtke, W. (2001) Vermeer teaching himself. In: The Cambridge Companion to Vermeer. Edited by Wayne E. Franits.]
