The ventral lateral nucleus (VL) is a nucleus of the thalamus.

Inputs and outputs

It receives neuronal inputs from the basal ganglia which includes the substantia nigra and the globus pallidus. It also has inputs from the cerebellum.

It sends out neuronal input to the primary motor cortex and premotor cortex.

Functions

It helps to function in coordination and planning of movement. It also plays a role in the learning of movement.

Clinical significance

A lesion of the VL has been associated with synesthesia.cite journal |author=Ro T, Farnè A, Johnson RM, "et al" |title=Feeling sounds after a thalamic lesion |journal= |volume= |issue= |pages= |year=2007 |pmid=17893864 |doi=10.1002/ana.21219]
