You are on a class trip out in the middle of the South American Rainforest. You and your friend Zoe abandon the group and encounter a strange stone beast that chases her and you through the jungle. Like most of the
Give Yourself Goosebumps stories the first decision you make will cause the story to split into two different storylines. If you run into a clearing the creature runs away when you come across a basket of fruit. Caught up in the smell of the fruit you eat a pear and are turned into an amphibious creature that is depicted on the cover of the book. Your friend Zoe runs but another kid takes her place and explains that you need to eat the fruit of the fireheart tree to restore yourself to normal. He also explains that you are a victim of a tribe that hates humans and therefore leaves out the fruit as a trap. The identity of this tribe changes depending on the choices made varying from an obscure tribe of men, to a tribe of Amazons. Endings in this storyline vary from death, returning to normal (with some slight differences like a monster tongue or fire burps), to one where you remain in monster form forever.
If you run towards a pool, you find yourself encountering a tribe of underdwellers that are unhappy with your intrusion. In order to escape you must obtain three pieces of gold and return them to the King within a given timespan. This storyline requires the reader to have some knowledge of other R. L. Stine books as a gnome will ask about them in exchange for pieces of gold. There is also a way that the reader can leave this storyline and try the other. Endings in this one include death, enslavement, escape, and being made into an underdweller. This storyline has nothing to do with the book cover.
