Simandou

Simandou is the site of a large iron ore deposit in southeastern flagicon|Guinea Guinea, in the province of Nzérékoré. [ [http://www.riotintoironore.com/ENG/operations/301_simandou.asp Iron ore ] Rio Tinto Group ]

Geography

It is located in the Monts du Toura.

It is located east of Banankoro and to the west of Kerouane.

Transport

Proposals are under way in 2007 to build a heavy duty standard gauge railway and deepwater port to permit the export of large tonnages of iron ore.

Simandou is very close - 30km - to the Liberian border, and an existing albeit possibly defunct IIRC standard gauge railway to the port of Buchanan. A heavy duty railway wholly within Guinean territory would be 700km long.

Simandou is near Diéké.

The mining company concerned is Rio Tinto Limited.
