Joseph Berry

Joseph Berry was a first class cricketer who played 5 games for Yorkshire County Cricket Club over a span of 13 years from 1861 to 1874. He was a right handed batsman who scored 82 runs at 10.25 with a best of 30. He took 2 catches but his right arm medium pace was not called upon.

He was born on November 29, 1829 in Dalton, Huddersfield, Yorkshire and died, aged 64 in Fartown in the same Yorkshire town on April 20, 1894.

He made his debut for Yorkshire in 1861 when they were still a pre county club, playing against Surrey in both the home and away fixtures that year with scant success. He appeared against Kent in 1864 and Cambridgeshire in 1865 with his final appearance coming 9 years later for Yorkshire against an All England XI at Huddersfield in July 1874. It was in this final match that he made his highest score of 30, batting at number 9, as Yorkshire ran out winners by an innings and 11 runs.

He also umpired at least 4 matches in first class cricket, both Roses Matches in 1877 and two games Yorkshire played against the touring Australians in 1878 and 1880.
