Uri Segal (born
7 March 1944 ) is anIsrael i musical conductor.Born in
Jerusalem , Segal studiedviolin and conducting at theRubin Conservatory in his hometown. From 1966 to 1969 he attended theGuildhall School of Music .In 1969, shortly after his graduation, Segal won first prize in the Dimitri Mitropolous Conducting Competition in
New York City . For a year after this, he served as Leonard Bernstein's assistant with theNew York Philharmonic Orchestra , before beginning four years of service with thePhilharmonia Hungarcia inHungary , where he was employed as principal conductor.From 1980 to 1982 he was the chief conductor of the
Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra . On relinquishing this role, he concentrated solely on a similar position with theIsrael Chamber Orchestra .Segal returned to the
United States in1989 when he became Music Director of theChautauqua Symphony Orchestra , as well as working as chief conductor for theCentury Orchestra Osaka inJapan .As of 2007, the 63-year-old Segal is still an active conductor at regular concerts. 2007 marks his final summer season at the
Chautauqua Institution . His career has so far stretched some 40 years.References
