Dig Dug Deeper is a 3D remake of the original Dig Dug. It was released for Windows in 2001 by Infogrames. As well as the classic underground world, it has an outside world, much like Dig Dug II The original concepts from the original are still there, but new ideas have been added.

Gameplay

The main character, Dig Dug (who also goes by the name of Taizo Hori in other games), is equipped with his usual weapon, the pump. Gameplay progresses as Dig Dug moves from planet to planet, each with a different number of levels, which each have underground levels. On the planet's surface, the gameplay is 3D, and there are a variety of holes. At first, there are no enemies on the surface, but Dig Dug can still fire his pump in eight directions, the usual, plus diagonally. These holes are closed, but when first reaching a level, a Pooka will jump out, opening a mound. If Dig Dug is maneuvered into it, the gameplay will shift to underground mode. This mode is basically the same as the original game, but with few more features described later. The enemies can "ghost" through walls at certain times too. After all but one of the enemies are destroyed, the remaining one will begin to flee at double-speed to the top of the level, which now has a tunnel to the surface. If the player destroys it, the level ends, and Dig Dug appears back on the surface. If it escapes, the same occurs, but now the enemy is on the surface. It still must be killed, but is harder, because its movement is no longer limited to just four directions. Game play goes on like this for the rest of the game.

Enemies

Pooka

The Pooka as featured in the original arcade game. It has no abilities, but its touch is still lethal to Dig Dug. It takes 4 pumps to destroy.

Elastic Pooka

The same as the Pooka, but blue and takes 10 pumps to kill.

Fygar

The same as the original Fygar in Dig Dug. Like a Pooka, its touch is lethal, but it can also breathe flames. However, regular Fygars can only shoot fire horizontally. All Fygars take 4 pumps to kill. Fygars are in all of the games of the Dig Dug series.

Elite Fygar

A purple Fygar that can shoot fire vertically as well as horizontally.

Really, Really Angry Fygar

This red-colored Fygar breathes long jets of flame that bend around corners. Odd though it may sound, "Really, Really Angry Fygar" is its official name.

Obstacles

Boulders

These will fall when a path has been cleared beneath them, crushing everything beneath them, including Dig Dug. However, once one hit an enemy, it scores massive points. The regular boulder shares all the properties of its original Dig Dug counterpart.

Round Boulders

Identical to the boulder, but can roll along corridors.

Exploding Boulders

Strangely, these boulders don't roll or fall. They are bluish and when a tunnel is dug close enough to allow oxygen to get to them, they vibrate and explode a few seconds later. This explosion destroys any monsters near them, plus Dig Dug.

Flaming Boulders

Same as exploding boulders, but are red, and when they explode, fire courses through the tunnels around them, incinerating anything in its path.

Gas Pockets

These white-colored pockets flood out through surrounding tunnels, and anything caught in the gas is destroyed.

Lava Pockets

Same as gas pockets, but red-colored and only flow down.
