Upper Styria

Upper Styria

In the Austrian usage of the term, Upper Styria ("Obersteiermark") refers exclusively to the northern, generally mountainous and well wooded part of the State of Styria, the other parts of the state being known as Western Styria and Eastern Styria (West and East of Graz respectively).

In Upper Styria, east of Judenburg, in the Mur-Mürz-Furche (the valleys formed by the rivers Mur and Mürz), there are extensive industrial sites. By contrast, the western part of Upper Styria is rather characterized by agriculture and tourism. Upper Styria consists of districts named after the towns of Murau, Liezen, Judenburg, Knittelfeld, Leoben, Bruck an der Mur and Mürzzuschlag.-----In Slovenian usage, the term Upper Styria ("Zgornja Štajerska") refers to the Austrian federal state of Styria, as opposed to the area is often called Lower Styria, the part of the old duchy of Styria that became part of Yugoslavia after World War I and is now part of Slovenia.
