California , attended the common schools; at the age of sixteen entered a printing office where he was employed for one year; moved with his parents toBrooklyn , N.Y., in 1880; reporter on theBrooklyn Eagle in 1881; in 1884 accompanied his father as his secretary on a lecture tour of Great Britain, at the close of which he joined the staff of the London Truth; returned to this country and joined the staff of theNorth American Review ; managing editor of the Standard 1887 - 1891; served as correspondent inWashington, D.C. , for a syndicate of Western papers in 1891; correspondent in England for the same syndicate in 1892; in 1893 became managing editor of the Florida Citizen at Jacksonville; returned toNew York City in 1895; on the death of his father in 1897 was nominated to succeed him as the candidate of the Jefferson Party formayor of New York City , but was unsuccessful; special correspondent inJapan in 1906; elected as a Democrat to the Sixty-second and Sixty-third Congresses (March 4 1911 -March 3 1915 ); was not a candidate for reelection in 1914; engaged in literary pursuits until his death in Washington, D.C., his interment is inGreen-Wood Cemetery , Brooklyn, N.Y.External links
