- Sper (Georgia)
Sper or Speri was an ancient Georgian principality. One part of this principality - Uper Sper was a district of
Armenia c.400 –800 . Located north-west of modern Erzurum, high in the mountains, corresponds to modern-day Turkish district ofİspir and northern mountainous areas of Erzurum province. TheÇoruh River originates here, on the southern side of thePontic Mountains . The area is very rough in terms of topography and climate.Sper was once the main fiefdom of the House of Bagratids, long before the Bagratids became Kings of Georgia (
809 ) and later Armenia (885 ).References
