Sper (Georgia)

Sper or Speri was an ancient Georgian principality. One part of this principality - Uper Sper was a district of Armenia c. 400–800. Located north-west of modern Erzurum, high in the mountains, corresponds to modern-day Turkish district of İspir and northern mountainous areas of Erzurum province. The Çoruh River originates here, on the southern side of the Pontic Mountains. The area is very rough in terms of topography and climate.

Sper was once the main fiefdom of the House of Bagratids, long before the Bagratids became Kings of Georgia (809) and later Armenia (885).
