Gokarna Mutt

Introduction

Gokarna Mutt (institution) is one of the 24 Mutts of the Dwaita order, a system established by Shri Madhvacharya in the 13th century.

This Mutt is also called as Partagli Jeevothama Mutt and is headquartered in Partagli, a small town in South Goa, on the banks of the river Kushaavati. There is still ongoing research to establish who exactly founded the mutt and when exactly it was founded. As per historic lore it is said that it was initiated by Shri Raghothama Theertharu (Bhavabodharu) of Shri Uttaradi Mutt [1] , also it is said that this Mutt was formed after it split away from the Shri Palimar Mutt at Udupi initiated by Shimad Ananda Theertharu (Madhwacharya).

The first pontiff of the Mutt was Shri 1008 Shri Narayana Theertha. The deity worshiped by the institution is Shri Raama. The mutt became well known as Jeevottama Mutt after the 3rd pontiff Shri Jeevottama Theertharu.

This mutt was also a victim of the mindless and fanatic Portuguese Christian missionaries which drove the original establishment from Madgao to Bhatkal in Karwar District in Karnataka. Shri Narayana Theertharu was a great scholar of the Dvaita order and earned the name "Shri Paada Wodayaru", for which he is still known today. During the late 1950s, Shri Dwarakanatha Theertharu established several educational institutions and republished several seminal works.
