In 2003, the school celebrated its 100th Anniversary.San Pedro High School is home to two protected landmarks, the Administration Building and Language Arts Building. Both were constructed in 1936 under mandate from the
Works Progress Administration . San Pedro High School also has a Mathematics and Sciences Building, a Vocational Arts Building, a Cafeteria, numerous bungalow-style classrooms, a large gymnasium, and a small gymnasium.A groundbreaking ceremony was held in June 2007 to celebrate the start of construction on the schools newest building, a gymnasium. Construction is expected to take approximately 15 months, and completion is estimated for late 2008.
Football
The San Pedro community has always been a great supporter of the San Pedro High Football Team. Games frequently sell out with over 4,000 people in attendance. The current Head Coach of the Varsity Team is Mike Walsh, who has held the title for over 27 years. Walsh coached Back To Back Marine League Champions during the 2005 and 2006 regular seasons.
During their 2006 season, the team was undefeated for 8 straight weeks until losing a game by 3 points to their rival team from Narbonne High School. The team then secured 3 game winning streak and progressed to the CIF LA City Section Championship Game. The season ended with a 12 win and 2 loss record. The 2006 season was a memorable season for most, because the Pirates lost the championship despite a strong performance all season long. That year was also home to a particularly embarrassing scandal involving one of the San Pedro coaches, who was terminated for his actions during a game. The team's 2007 season record was 7 wins and 4 losses.
Over the years, the team has lost several teammates to season-ending injuries as well as deaths. La'Terian "LT" Tasby (#85 2007)was shot and killed October 27th, 2007. Tasby's teammates and friends signed a petition to retire his Varsity Football jersey number 85, which has since been retired in his honor. There has been a banner with his football number 85 hung in the home stands of the Pirates football feild to show there honor and love for La'Terian (LT) Tasby.
Air Force JROTC
The Air Force Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC) program provides an educational and training program to produce leaders and active citizens of America. JROTC is a four year program giving students the opportunity to access citizenship training and aerospace knowledge. Physical Education (PE) credit is given to students toward graduation requirements for the 9th and 10th grade students and elective credit for 11th and 12th grade students.
JROTC is completely free to all students. All materials and uniforms are provided. Students are required to wear their uniform at least once per week. Textbooks and workbooks are also provided to the students with the requirement that they return them at the end of the year.
Their Unit CA-956 has won the Honorable Distinguished Unit Award for six consecutive years the only school organization to win the highest team/group award possible six years in a row at SPHS. The Instructors are Major Douglas A. Stiegleigter & Chief Master Sergeant Tyrone E. Wood.
The Color Guard team won 6th place out of 35 competing teams at the Golden Bear Westcoast National Drill Meet on March 26th, 2008. The team members include Ivan Sulic, Christopher Prince, William Stanhke & Christina Teel. This was the first trophy earned in nearly three years. This just shows the spirit of pirates at there best.
The Cadets of the Year for 2008 are, First Year- Devin Teidimann, Second Year- Donnie Lopez, Third Year- Ivan Sulic and Forth Year- Brenda Vazquez. The highest unit honor the Commandants Award went to Cadet Chief Master Sergeant William Rubner a forth year cadet.
Magnet Departments
Marine Science Magnet
The Marine Science Math Science Technology Magnet at
San Pedro High School is a four year college preparatory program which allows college bound students to focus on math and science. Students enrolled in the academic program are required to complete four years of math and science classes and are assigned community service hours focusing in marine science. The Marine Science Magnet has been incredibly effective in segregating the white and asian students away from the rest of the school so that they can enjoy smaller class sizes and better teachers, and therefore, improved college prospects. Although ostensibly an integration program, many of the teachers have openly commented on the actual effect of the program. The school's higher level math teacher has frequently said, "The higher you go in the math and science classes, the whiter and more Asian it gets." Even in a school that's 80% Black and Hispanic, segregation and preferential treatment of white students from everyone else still exists. The primary focus is marine science, so students have the opportunity to enroll in specialized science classes including
Marine Biology ,Physical Oceanography , and Advanced Marine Science. By working with the Marine Mammal Care Center [ [http://www.sanpedrochamber.com/champint/mamalctr.htm Marine Mammal Care Center, San Pedro CA ] ] , students may also take classes and participate in a Marine Mammal Internship on site. This program offers students opportunities to work hands on with marine animals.Police Academy Magnet
The Police Academy Magnet is also a four year program that focuses on careers in law enforcement. Students enroll in a program of both academic and physical classes. The four year program includes training, community service and regular graduation requirements. The Police Magnet employs a full time
Los Angeles Police Department officer to work as the students' mentor and educator. The police officer provides a connection to the law enforcement for the students.Students are required to complete 50 hours of community service each year; 15 of which must be law enforcement related. Students accepted into the Police Academy Magnet have the opportunity to participate in the Acura LA Bike Tour, the Los Angeles Federal Bar Association Medal of Valor Luncheon and internships with Sony Pictures in different fields.
