'solid - the socialist youth

['solid] - die sozialistische jugend (English: ['solid] - the socialist youth) is a political youth organization in Germany. It defines itself as "close" to the Left Party, making it the unofficial Youth Wing of the Party. The name "solid" comes from sozialistisch, links, demokratisch "(socialist, left, democratic.)"

It was formed in Hanover in June 1999 and was accepted by the Left Party (then the Party of Democratic Socialism) as a "PDS-close" youth organisation in March 2002. Membership is for people between the ages of 14 and 35 and in March 2005 they had 1,500 members.

Before 1999 the PDS's youth organisation was Arbeitsgemeinschaft Junge GenossInnen; since then, most young members of the Left-Party have concentrated within ['solid] . But due to differences, other young members formed the "PDS-youth", a youth organisation integrated within the party and by self-definition of the group serving to form future cadres for the full-fledged party. The PDS-youth is small compared to ['solid] and only represented in a small number of the federal States of Germany.
