"Pseudomonas pertucinogena" is Gram-negative, rod-shaped, motile bacterium. It derives its name from the fact that it produces pertucin, a bacteriocin active against phase I organisms of "Bordetella pertussis" [cite journal |author=Kawai Y |title=Purification and characterization of pertucin produced by "Pseudomonas pertucinogena" |journal=Antimicrob Agents Chemother |volume=6 |issue=3 |pages=347–59 |year=1974 Sep |pmid=15830486 ] . Based on 16S rRNA analysis, "P. pertucinogena" has been placed in the "P. pertucinogena" group [cite journal |author=Anzai, "et al." |title=Phylogenetic affiliation of the pseudomonads based on 16S rRNA sequence |journal=Int J Syst Evol Microbiol |volume=50 (Pt 4) |pages=1563–89 |year=2000, Jul |pmid=10939664] , named after this species.

"P. pertucinogena" lends its name to a subgroup within the genus "Pseudomonas". The only other member of the "P. pertucinogena" subgroup is "Pseudomonas denitrificans".
