Politics of New Hampshire
- Politics of New Hampshire
New Hampshire has experienced one of the most dramatic political shifts in America in recent decades. Once a staunchly conservative state that voted for Presidents Nixon and Reagan twice by overwhelming majorities, New Hampshire has been known for its strong anti-tax sentiment.
However, since the 1990s New Hampshire has often been in the Democratic column in both state and national elections. The state voted for President Clinton both times, and has elected numerous Democrats to the Governorship over the past 15 years. In the 2006 election, Democrats unexpectedly won New Hampshire's two U.S. House seats. The cause of this shift in the liberal direction is debated, with some arguing that Republicans' support of the REAL ID Act, the USA PATRIOT Act, and the Iraq War alienated libertarians and paleoconservatives, while others argue that recent migrants to New Hampshire have changed its political climate.
