WWNU, also known as "New 92 Country", is a radio station located in Columbia featuring a contemporary Country format. The station is licensed by the FCC to the nearby community of Irmo and broadcasts at 92.1 FM with a ERP of 15kw.

Station History

The 92.1 frequency originally signed on in late 1985 as WJRQ in Johnston, featuring a MOR format. The station eventually became WJES-FM in 1996 as a simulcast partner with Oldies-formated 92.7 WKSX. The station became known as "The Twins". The WJES call letters stood for "J"ohnston, "E"dgefield, & "S"aluda, the towns that the station broadcasted to.

In 2003, Saluda County (where WJES-FM was located) became part of the Columbia market, which paved the way for the station to be moved in. In 2004, the simulcast with WKSX was dropped in preparation for the move. WJES-FM's license was changed to Irmo and the station increased its power to the present 15kw. with a Country format adopted under the WWNU call sign.

The station is owned by Double O Radio of South Carolina, which also owns Classic Country WWNQ in the Columbia radio market.
