USS Harvest (1861)

USS Harvest (1861)

The USS "Harvest", an American bark of 314 tons, was a whaler operating in the Pacific Ocean from its base in New England.

During the Civil War, she was purchased on 21 October, 1861, by Morgan and Chappell for $4,000 for the Stone Fleet and sent to the South. Lee Spence, (Narwhal Press, Charleston/Miami, 1995) [ISBN 1886391017] [ISBN 1886391009] , p. 151] With W.W. Taylor as the master, she arrived off Savannah, Georgia, on 4 December, 1861. Unlike most of the other ships in the Stone Fleet, she was not deliberately sunk. Official records state that she was retained for use as a coal scow.
