Iain Softley, born November 30, 1956, is an English
film director . He was educated atSt Benedict's School ,Ealing , where he played the part ofThomas a Becket in its1975 production ofT. S. Eliot 's play,Murder in the Cathedral , andQueens' College, Cambridge . He is married to producerSarah Curtis .His movies include the Beatles film "Backbeat" (1994), "Hackers" (1995), "The Wings of the Dove" (1997), "K-PAX" (2001), and "
The Skeleton Key " (2005). Softley will next direct "Inkheart" (2008), which is based on the book of the same name, and has been developing an adaptation ofStephen Gallagher 's novelThe Boat House forDimension Films , set in the English Lake District. He previously attempted to film the book in1999 , withMilla Jovovich in the lead role of a haunted and driven Russian emigre.He also directed
