Edwin Theodor Saemisch (
September 30 ,1833 , -September 29 ,1909 ) was a Germanophthalmologist who was born inLuckau . In 1858 he received his medical doctorate from theUniversity of Berlin , and afterwards was an assistant toAlbrecht von Graefe inBerlin , andAlexander Pagenstecher inWiesbaden . In 1867 he became "professor extraordinary" at theUniversity of Bonn , and in 1873 attained the title of "full professor".Saemisch specialized in eye disorders, particularly diseases of the
conjuctiva ,sclera andcornea . He is credited for providing descriptions ofvernal conjunctivitis and a type of corneal ulcer called "ulcus serpens corneae". He is remembered for his written works, especially the multi-volume manual on ophthalmology titled "Handbuch der gesammten Augenheilkunde". This work was co-authored withAlfred Carl Graefe , who was a cousin to Albrecht von Graefe.Associated eponyms:
