Robert MacPherson (born
May 25 1944 ,Lakewood, Ohio ) is an American mathematician at theInstitute for Advanced Study . He is best known for the invention ofintersection homology withMark Goresky , whose thesis he directed at Brown University. MacPherson was previously employed atBrown University , theUniversity of Paris , and theMassachusetts Institute of Technology .Educated at
Swarthmore College andHarvard University , MacPherson received hisPh.D. from Harvard in 1970. His thesis, written under the direction ofRaoul Bott , was entitled "Singularities of Maps and Characteristic Classes".elected publications
