county located in theU.S. state ofTexas . In 2000, its population was 7,771. It is named for Dolphin Ward Floyd, who died on his 32nd birthday,March 6 ,1836 , defending the Alamo. Floyd County is one of 46 prohibition, or entirely dry, counties in the state of Texas. The seat of the county is FloydadaGR|6.Geography

census GR|2 of 2000, there were 7,771 people, 2,730 households, and 2,110 families residing in the county. Thepopulation density was 8 people per square mile (3/km²). There were 3,221 housing units at an average density of 3 per square mile (1/km²). The racial makeup of the county was 74.16% White, 3.38% Black or African American, 0.76% Native American, 0.17% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 19.66% from other races, and 1.81% from two or more races. 45.93% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.There were 2,730 households out of which 39.40% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 63.90% were married couples living together, 9.70% had a female householder with no husband present, and 22.70% were non-families. 21.30% of all households were made up of individuals and 12.30% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.79 and the average family size was 3.26.
In the county, the population was spread out with 31.40% under the age of 18, 7.40% from 18 to 24, 24.40% from 25 to 44, 20.70% from 45 to 64, and 16.20% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females there were 93.80 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.90 males.
The median income for a household in the county was $26,851, and the median income for a family was $32,123. Males had a median income of $25,487 versus $18,929 for females. The
