nihongo|Hisoka|ヒソカ|Hisoka is a character from the manga and anime series Hunter × Hunter by Yoshihiro Togashi.

Personality

Hisoka is erratic, volatile, and found joy in the act of killing his targeted victims. He believes himself to be one of the best fighters in the world, and seeking and challenging anybody who appears to be equally powerful as him. He had previously set his sights on Chrollo, the leader of the Phantom Troupe, finding him to be a worthy opponent which he would want to kill with relish. This interest however was lost when Chrollo was deprived the use of nen. Hisoka was member number four in the Phantom Troupe, though he only pretended to join in order to get closer to Chrollo. He hopes to fight Chrollo after having a nen eraser restore Chrollo's nen. He also developed an interest in Gon and Killua, and expects them to develop into worthy opponents.

Talents

Notorious for his cruel and deceitful fighting ability, Hisoka has proven to be deadly. His deviousness and volatility has made many opponents difficult to anticipate his next move, and this has led to him winning many battles. Using Shu powered poker cards as his primary weapon, he throws them with ease and deadly accuracy. When he combines the use of his poker cards with the use of his nen ability, it becomes an even deadlier weapon.

Nen Abilities

Hisoka's nen abilities have served him well on numerous occasions, and especially compliment his devious nature. While fighting with Kastro, he once fooled everyone by controlling his chopped arms with nen. Hisoka uses two versatile Hatsu, both in and out of combat:
*Nen Ability: Texture Surprise (ドッキリテクスチャ 「薄っぺらな嘘」), "lit." "Flimsy Lies"Narrator's monologue on Hisoka's abilities. cite book|last=Togashi|first=Yoshihiro|authorlink=Yoshihiro Togashi|title=Hunter × Hunter, Volume 07|year=2006|publisher=Viz Media|chapter=Chapter 055|pages=Pg.16|isbn=978-1-4215-0332-5] Hisoka can apply his aura to any thin surface (such as paper or cloth) and change its appearance. This ability is impossible to detect visually without an ability such as Gyo, however, if any physical contact is made, the deception becomes obvious. Hisoka named this ability after a brand of candy that contained a surprise.

After his fight with Kastro in Heaven's Arena, it is revealed that the spider tattoo on Hisoka's back was a fake, made out of cloth. In Yorknew City, Hisoka also changed the words on the prediction written for him by Chrollo's stolen Lovely Ghostwriter ability. This was in order to fool the Phantom Troupe into thinking that he had been forced to betray the Troupe's abilities by Kurapika's Judgment Chain. He did a similar thing on Greed Island to his Book, in order to fool Gon and Killua into thinking that he had not met any Troupe members there.
*Nen Ability: Bungee Gum (バンジーガム 「伸縮自在の愛」), "lit." "Elastic Love"Hisoka can alter his aura's consistency into an incredibly sticky substance somewhat akin to bubble gum, albeit much stronger. It can be used to pull opponents within punching range for a flurry of rebound pummels. Bungee Gum can both stretch and contract, depending on what Hisoka desires. It can be attached either by pointing at his target or through direct physical contact. When not attached to Hisoka's body, Bungee Gum cannot stretch more than 10 millimeters. Hisoka named this ability after a brand of chewing gum he liked as a child.

Hisoka's Bungee Gum cannot be seen unless his opponent uses Gyo. However, even if an opponent uses Gyo, it is still almost impossible to avoid, as Hisoka can simply attach Bungee Gum while hitting his opponent.

Relationships

Although Hisoka is an enigma, there are marked attitudes towards the characters he meets.

*Gon and Killua: Hisoka refers to the two as "unripe fruits" and wonders why "unripe fruits look so delicious." Hisoka lives to fight and found thrills on killing. Thus, he felt that the two have great potential to become amazing fighters--and when they do become strong enough to offer a truly satisfying duel, Hisoka plans to kill them. However, in order to allow them to reach this stage, Hisoka refuses to allow them to die, demanding that their death is through his hand. Hisoka even teamed up with the pair against Razor.
*Kurapika and Leorio: During the fourth stage of the Hunter Exam, on Zevil Island, Hisoka refers the two as "unripe fruits", however, his interest in them is minimal compared to his interest in Gon and Killua. This may be because he sees less fighting potential in them. He forms a loose alliance with Kurapika later, however, against the Phantom Troupe.
*Illumi: The two are comfortable with each other in the way two men of remarkably high ability would gather in a world of lesser beings. They may even be friends, though it is not known how they met, they can call upon each other for favors. When Illumi is ready to kill Gon, he thinks that he can apologize to Hisoka later despite Hisoka having said that anyone who kills Gon "will not be let off lightly." At the moment Illumi will kill Gon, one card wielded from the shadows and stops Illumi in his tracks. Later on, Hisoka hires Illumi to replace him as a doppelgänger at the Phantom Troupe headquarters so he could sneak out to challenge Chrollo to a fight.
*Chrollo Lucilfer: The sole reason Hisoka masqueraded as a Troupe member was for the purpose of defeating Chrollo in a battle. Near the end of the Yorknew City arc, Hisoka finally gains the chance to fight Chrollo. However, Kurapika has already stripped Chrollo of his nen ability through his use of the Judgement Chain. Thus, Hisoka loses his desire to fight against Chrollo until he gain his powers back.
*Machi: Machi appears to be Hisoka's link to the Phantom Troupe. She oversaw Hisoka's match with Kastro in Heavens Arena and afterward sewed both of Hisoka's arms back to perfect shape with her nen ability, however, she does this solely because Hisoka is paying her for the work. Hisoka regards both Machi and Machi's abilities with keen interest, though Machi considers Hisoka a pest at best and a potential enemy of Chrollo's at worst.
