census GR|2 of 2000, there were 3,344 people, 1,092 households, and 841 families residing in the county. Thepopulation density was 0.7 people per square mile (0.3/km²). There were 1,471 housing units at an average density of 0.3 per square mile (0.1/km²). The racial makeup of the county was 87.23% White, 0.33% Black or African American, 1.41% Native American, 0.18% Asian, 8.76% from other races, and 2.09% from two or more races. 75.03% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.There were 1,092 households out of which 45.30% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 63.00% were married couples living together, 11.40% had a female householder with no husband present, and 22.90% were non-families. 21.10% of all households were made up of individuals and 8.30% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 3.03 and the average family size was 3.56.
In the county, the population was spread out with 34.10% under the age of 18, 8.90% from 18 to 24, 26.70% from 25 to 44, 20.40% from 45 to 64, and 9.90% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 30 years. For every 100 females there were 102.90 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.30 males.
The median income for a household in the county was $21,045, and the median income for a family was $22,314. Males had a median income of $22,862 versus $18,594 for females. The
per capita income for the county was $9,549. About 32.60% of families and 35.80% of the population were below thepoverty line , including 41.30% of those under age 18 and 42.60% of those age 65 or over.
