John C. Browne (physicist)

John Browne is a former director of the Los Alamos National Laboratory. He held the post of director starting November 3, 1997, and relinquished it in January 2003 to George Peter Nanos. Prior to coming to Los Alamos, Browne worked at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, and taught physics at Duke University (where he received his doctorate). He received an A.B. from Drexel University. During his graduate studying at the Duke University he was supervised by Gary Mitchell, a famous scientist in Nuclear Physics. The one remark Mitchell remembers about Browne is that when Browne finished his PhD work, he typed his PhD thesis in one month and a half, which is too quick, but so far it is one of the best PhD thesis among 54 Mitchell's students.
