University of Birmingham Debating Society
- University of Birmingham Debating Society
The University of Birmingham Debating Society is one of the oldest student societies at the University of Birmingham, Joseph Chamberlain being one of the original Birmingham debaters. The current Chairperson and head of the society is Sammy Neville.
The society holds public debates on alternating Thursday nights, with public figures being asked to speak. Guests in the past few years have ranged from MPs to distinguished academics, leaders of pressure groups to writers and journalists. A look back through the society's records reveals a rich history of prominent thinkers featuring in these very debates. On occasion, such debates appear to have captured the zeitgeist of the times, with photographs of a famous appearance by Malcolm X, documented in the university's newspaper 'Redbrick', showcasing the very best of such debates.
Debaters also compete at competitions each weekend, representing the university on the IONA Debating Circuit across the UK and Ireland. The society also funds for their best teams to compete at the most elite international levels, representing Birmingham at the European Universities Debating Championships and at the prestigious World Universities Debating Championships.
The Society holds debating workshops, open for anyone to attend, on Wednesdays at 2pm, in Lecture Theatre 2, Law Building of the university. The society is one of the most diverse in the university guild, and members from all corners of the university come together in the spirit of their time-honoured battle of wits.
