- Carl Oberg
General Carl Albrecht Oberg (b.January 27 ,1897 inHamburg ; diedJune 3 ,1965 inFlensburg ) was a HigherSS and Police Leader (HSSPF) of France during theSecond World War .Since 1942 to 1944 Oberg headed all German police units in France included SD and Gestapo chief of which was SS colonelHelmut Knochen . Oberg was therefore the supreme authority in France for managing anti-Jews policy and battle against the French Resistance. He thus drove the famous and sad rounding up of Jews in the Paris Velodrome d'Hiver ( "la rafle du Vel d'hiv") in 1942.No Jew nore Underground soldier has been deported or executed in France during the WWII out of Gal Oberg's responsibility. Sentenced to death then to life imprisonment (presidential pardon gotten in 1958). Moreover this high ranking nazi officer was released on Nov. 28 1962 ; a decision taken by De Gaulle in the context of rapprochement between France and Germany.
According the Jewish Virtual Library, "Oberg was also responsible for applying the Final Solution in France. This action resulted in 75,000 Jews being deported from France to extermination camps in Nazi Germany and Poland."
His mate
Helmut Knochen has been released too the same day and the two men eventually died in their beds...Paradoxically Gestapo captainKlaus Barbie , who was very lower in the SS hierarchy, was extadited from Bolivia to France to be sentenced to life and die in prison.External links
