OpenTMC (Open Traffic Messaging Channel) is a specification defining a cross-platform, cross-language protocol for encapsulating TMC messages in an NMEA data stream. The specification consists of a set custom NMEA messages that can be used to send real time traffic data in a GPS or navigation environment and can be used to enable dynamic routing dependent of the traffic situation or to increase the accuracy of traveling time calculation in navigation systems.

OpenTMC was initially developed by Leadtek Research Europe in 2003. A few manufacturers of PNDs and GPS receivers are, or have been, implementing this standard in their products. Navigation software applications supporting OpenTMC are Destinator 7 and newer, iGO8, Nokia and Mapfactor. Currently the specification is OpenTMC 2.0 rev. 1.03 and is maintained by Amaryllo. The specification can be downloaded at the community site http://www.opentmc.net. Hardware and software issues as well as discussions about the OpenTMC-specification can be discussed at http://www.opentmc.org.
