Early life and education

Gorenberg was born in St. Louis and grew up in California [http://southjerusalem.com/gershom-gorenberg/ South Jerusalem: Gershom Gorenberg] . Accessed March 25 2008.] . In 1977, Gorenberg traveled to Israel to study and decided to stay on [http://www.booksense.com/people/archive/gorenbergg.jsp Very Interesting People: Interview with Gershom Gorenberg] . Gavin J. Grant. "Book Sense". Accessed March 19 2007.] , eventually becoming a dual citizen:

I grew up in California and I came [to Israel] to study in 1977 -- I ended up staying and going to graduate school here, and beginning to work as a journalist... I'm a citizen of both countries and, for writing a book like this, that's very helpful because I'm writing about something I'm extremely familiar with. I'm also writing for an audience in the country I grew up in and I'm still very connected to. I think in both languages, as it were.
Gorenberg graduated from the University of California at Santa Cruz and earned his M.A. in education from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. He currently lives in Jerusalem, Israel with his wife, journalist Myra Noveck, and three children. .

Career

For many years an associate editor of "The Jerusalem Report," an Israeli biweekly news magazine, Gorenberg is now a senior correspondent for "The American Prospect", an American political monthly. He edited in 1996 a selected collection of Jerusalem Report essays published under the title "Seventy Facets: A Commentary on the Torah from the Pages from the Jerusalem Report," and co-authored the Jerusalem Report's biography of Yitzhak Rabin, "Shalom, Friend: The Life and Legacy of Yitzhak Rabin." In 2000 he published "The End of Days: Fundamentalism and the Struggle for the Temple Mount," and in 2006, his study of the origins of Israeli settlement in occupied territory, "The Accidental Empire: Israel and the Birth of the Settlements, 1967-1977."

Gorenberg blogs at [http://southjerusalem.com South Jerualem] together with Haim Watzman. He is a frequent guest on BloggingHeads.tv, particularly in discussions related to Israel.

Gorenberg has contributed features and commentary on politics, religion and aspects of Israeli-American relations to major American newspapers including "The New York Times" [http://select.nytimes.com/gst/abstract.html?res=F30F16FF38550C738DDDAA0894DE404482 Israel's Tragedy Foretold] .
