1490 -October 28 ,1553 ) was an Italian Cardinal [1517. [http://www.fiu.edu/~mirandas/consistories-xvi.htm] ] and diplomat. He waspapal legate in France, and conducted negotiations with theEmperor Charles V .Salviati was born in
Florence toJacopo Salviati , son of Giovanni Salviati and Maddalena Gondi, andLucrezia di Lorenzo de' Medici , elder daughter ofLorenzo de' Medici .Pope Leo X , who raised him to the cardinalate in 1517, was Lorenzo's son, and therefore Giovanni's uncle. His brotherBernardo Salviati and nephewAnton Maria Salviati also became cardinals.He held many posts. He was
protonotary apostolic ,bishop of Porto e Santa Rufina , and sub-dean of theSacred College of Cardinals . In 1526 signed for the Pope theLeague of Cognac against Charles V. He becameBishop of Albano in 1543.He was on friendly terms with
Machiavelli , writing to him.
