The Bishop of Glasgow, after 1492 Archbishop of Glasgow, was the ecclesiastical head of the
Diocese of Glasgow and then, asArchbishop of Glasgow, theArchdiocese of Glasgow . Today he is theOrdinary of theRoman Catholic Metropolitan Archdiocese of Glasgow.The
bishopric as a functionalGlasgow institution originates in the period of the reign of David, Prince of the Cumbrians, but the earliest attested bishops come from the 11th century, appointees of theArchbishop of York . The seat of the bishops and archbishops was atGlasgow Cathedral until 1688. After the Scottish church broke its links with Rome in 1560, the Archbishopric continued under the independent Scottish church until 1689 whenEpiscopacy in theChurch of Scotland was finally abolished.In the following centuries Catholicism slowly began re-establishing itself, culminating in 1829 with legal The Catholic Emancipation Act. The archbishopric was revived when the Vicariate Apostolic of the Western District was elevated to archdiocese status on
4 March 1878 on theRestoration of the Scottish hierarchy , and then to metropolitan archdiocese status on25 May 1947 .The current archbishop is His Grace the Most Reverend Mario Joseph Conti, Metropolitan Archbishop of Glasgow.
