Jean Stewart

Jean Stewart (born December 23, 1930 in Dunedin) is a former swimmer from New Zealand, who after her marriage in 1957 became known as Jean Hurring. She represented her native country at two consecutive Summer Olympics, 1952 and 1956 Summer Olympics. In 1952 she won the bronze medal in the women's 100 metres backstroke.

Stewart also won medals in the 110 yards backstroke at the Empire Games; silver in 1950 and bronze in 1954.

Stewart is the central figure in the first family of New Zealand swimming. Her mother, Mary, was the first woman to swim for Otago at national championships. Her husband, Lincoln Hurring, was an Empire Games medallist. Her two sisters were national junior champions. And her son, Gary Hurring, won a Commonwealth Games gold medal and a world championship silver.
