TaxACT

TaxACT is a tax return preparation software for the United States.

TaxACT is developed and marketed by 2nd Story Software, Inc. The company claims to have done 18 million tax returns since they started their service. Their marketing strategies include providing free basic federal tax return preparation and free e-files with the hope of building a customer base and the possible revenues from their premium products and state returns.

Free Electronic Federal Income Tax Filing

TaxAct provides free files as part of the Free File program which is a free federal tax preparation and electronic filing program for eligible individual taxpayers developed through a partnership between the IRS and the Free File Alliance LLC, a group of private sector tax software companies. As of March 2007, TaxACT is listed on the [http://www.irs.gov/app/freeFile/ IRS website ] as part of the Free File program.

TaxACT provides free electronic federal income tax filing for all users. They broke with other members of the Free File Alliance who negotiated a new agreement with the IRS in 2006 to restrict free filing offers only to income tax filers with incomes less than $50,000.
