John G. Vlazny, born February 22, 1937, in Chicago Illinois. He received his education at Archbishop Quigley Preparatory Seminary in Chicago and St. Mary of the Lake Seminary, Mundelein, Illinois and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1958. In 1960, he attended the North American College, earning a Bachelor degree in Theology, and was also enrolled at Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome, Italy, and earned a Sacred Theology Licentiate in 1962. While in Rome on December 20, 1961, he was ordained a priest at St. Peter's Basilica. In 1967, he attended the University of Michigan and earned a Master of Arts degree.

In 1972, he attended Loyola University Chicago and earned a Master of Education degree.

On October 18, 1983, Pope John Paul II, appointed him an Auxiliary Bishop of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Chicago, and he was ordained bishop at Holy Name Cathedral, on December 13, 1983.

On July 29, 1987, Pope John Paul II appointed Bishop Vlazney the sixth Bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Winona, in Winona, Minnesota [http://www.dow.org/history/history-pastbishops.html]
