Andrex

Andrex

Andrex is a company that manufactures toilet roll. It is a subsidiary of Kimberly-Clark.

The company mascot is the "Andrex Puppy", a labrador puppy that appears on the company's television adverts, currently voiced by comedian Rik Mayall.

History

The name Andrex comes from St Andrews's Mill in Walthamstow, where the toilet tissue was first made in 1942. It was the first 2-ply tissue. Kimberly Clark, the owner, is the world's largest tissue maker. Almost all Andrex mainstream is made in Northfleet (All coloured Andrex is produced there from Pulp to Packet and most of the White produced is produced in Northfleet), while Flint and Barrow-in-Furness supplement the production and conversion of Mainstream, but also produce and convert other Andrex lines, such as Puppy on a Roll, Quilts and Aloe Vera.

The famous Andrex Puppy appeared in 1972, and since then there have been 120 different adverts with the scampering puppy. In 2004, it replaced its advertising slogan "Soft, Strong and very Long", with "Tuggable, Huggable softness".

In cricket, an "Andrex Shot" is one that is soft, strong and very long.

Usage

One and a half million rolls of Andrex are used in the UK each day - enough to go round the world one and a half times, and the equivalent of 18 rolls a second. Each year, 8.25 million miles of Andrex are used in the UK. 12 years of usage would be enough to stretch to the Sun. White is the most popular colour. In 2006, Andrex was the UK's 7th top selling grocery brand, below Nescafé and above Lucozade, selling £303m. It has been in the top 10 UK grocery brands every year since it began, and is the top selling non-food brand in the UK. It has a 35% share of the market and has been the market leader for 40 years. One mile of Andrex costs £36.
