March 23 ,1941 —November 12 ,1997 ), professionally known as Carola, was a Finnish singer. She was born in Helsinki as Carola Christina Standertskjöld. From a very young age she took interest in learning other languages, which she studied in Switzerland. This knowledge gave her the ability to release singles and perform in many languages including Spanish, French, German, and English. During her studies, she also had the privilege of appearing in public for the first time in Spain. Her pop songs were mostly infuenced byschlager ,jazz ,blues ,soul ,folk music and her love for French pop songs. Carola's first single was aJewish folk song, "Hava nagilah", 1963. She released the german single "Warum Willst Du Das Alles Vergessen" in 1965.In the
sixties andseventies , she recorded the songs "Kielletyt leikit", "Rakkauden jälkeen", "Jerusalem", "Herrojen kanssa pellon laidassa" and "Mä lähden stadiin". She also covered 3 winning songs from the Eurovision song contest ("La La La" [1968] , "Un Banc Un Arbre Une Rue" [1971] , "Apres Toi" [1972] ). In the mid 70's, Carola was sick of constantly living in the public eye, so she ended her musical career. All throughout the 80's, she rarely performed, but made select appearances at different clubs. In 1985, Carola was diagnosed withAlzheimer's disease . Even still, she performed in small venues and charity concerts. On November 12th, 1997, Carola passed away inKirkkonummi , after her long battle withAlzheimer's disease .In 2004, an album of two separate 1966 performances by Carola was released for the first time on CD. "Carola and The Heikki Sarmanto Trio" features 10 songs recorded at YLE (Finland's Broadcasting Company) and 4 others recorded live.
