result = United States retainsThe 7th Ryder Cup Matches were held at the Portland Golf Club in Portland, Oregon, marking a resumption of the tournament after World War II forced its cancellation from 1939 to 1945. The United States overwhelmed the British team by winning the contest by a score of 11–1. From 1947 to 1967 it was the worst defeat a Great Britain team suffered at the hands of the United States, and to date it remains the closest that a side has come to not winning any matches in any single Ryder Cup competition. The British team, led by Henry Cotton, knew that they had no real chance of winningFact|date=September 2008 and proved themselves correct on the first day by losing every foursomes match. The American team took a 4–0 lead into the second day, and continued to dominate by winning all but one singles match. The only British victory in the competition came when Sam King beat Herman Keiser 4 & 3 to save them from leaving Portland without winning any points.

Format

The Ryder Cup is a match play event, with each match worth one point. From 1927 through 1959, the format consisted of 4 foursome (alternate shot) matches on the first day and 8 singles matches on the second day, for a total of 12 points. Therefore, 6½ points were required to win the Cup. All matches were played to a maximum of 36 holes.
