- Proby Baronets
There have been two Baronetcies created for persons with the surname Proby, one in the
Baronetage of England and one in theBaronetage of the United Kingdom . The first creation is extinct while the second creation is still extant.The Proby Baronetcy, of Elton in the County of Huntingdon, was created in the Baronetage of England on
7 March 1662 for Thomas Proby. He represented Amersham and Huntingdonshire in the House of Commons. The title became extinct on his death in 1689. Proby's first cousin William Proby was the ancestor of the Earls of Carysfort.The Proby Baronetcy, of Elton Hall in the County of Huntingdon, was created in the Baronetage of the United Kingdom on
30 January 1952 for Major Richard George Proby, President of theCountry Landowners' Association . He was the son of Colonel Douglas Hamilton, who assumed by Royal license the surname of Proby in 1904, son of Lord Claud Hamilton and his wife Lady Elizabeth Emma Proby, daughter ofGranville Leveson Proby, 3rd Earl of Carysfort , and sister ofWilliam Proby, 5th Earl of Carysfort (on whose death in 1909 the earldom became extinct). Lord Claud Hamilton was the second son ofJames Hamilton, Viscount Hamilton , eldest son ofJohn Hamilton, 1st Marquess of Abercorn . Consequently, the present holder of the Proby Baronetcy of Elton Hall is also in remainder to the marquessate of Abercorn and its subsidiary titles, titles held by his kinsman theDuke of Abercorn .Proby Baronets, of Elton (1662)
