Justin Keating ( _ga. Saorbhreathach Céitinn; born 7 January 1930) was a senior Irish Labour Party politician.
Born in
Dublin , Keating was educated atSandford Park School , and then atUniversity College Dublin and theUniversity of London . He became a lecturer in anatomy at UCD’s veterinary college from 1955 until 1960 and was senior lecturer atTrinity College Dublin from 1960 until 1965. He wasRTÉ 's head of agricultural programmes for two years before returning to Trinity in 1967. While at RTÉ, he scripted and presented "Telefís Feirme", a series for the agricultural community, for which he won aJacob's Award in 1966.Keating was first elected to
Dáil Éireann at the 1969 general election as a Labour PartyTeachta Dála (TD) for Dublin County North. From 1973 to 1977 he served in theNational Coalition government underLiam Cosgrave as Minister for Industry & Commerce. In 1973 he was appointed aMember of the European Parliament from the Oireachtas, serving on the short-lived first delegation. He lost his Dáil inFianna Fáil 's landslide victory at the 1977 general election, but was subsequently elected to the14th Seanad Éireann on theAgricultural Panel , serving there until 1981.
