ATREE

Ashoka Trust for Research in Ecology and the Environment (ATREE) was established in 1996 as a non-profit organisation. Its mission is to integrate rigorous natural sciences and social sciences with policy, education and socially responsible conservation action.

Awards

* Elinor Ostrom and Harini Nagendra, research associates with the Center for the Study of Institutions, Population and Environmental Change at Indiana University, Bloomington, Indiana, USA have been awarded the Cozzarelli Prize from the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences for their article, "Insights on linking forests, trees and people from the air, on the ground and in the laboratory.". Nagendra is the Asia research coordinator for CIPEC and adjunct fellow with Ashoka Trust for Research in Ecology and the Environment in Bangalore, India. The majority of funding for research and support came from the Ford Foundation, the MacArthur Foundation, the National Science Foundation and a, Branco Weis Fellowship. * The Ministry of Environment and Forests, Government of India has awarded a consultancy to the Ashoka Trust for Research in Ecology and the Environment (ATREE) for "Defining "Forest" in an Indian Context". The objective of the study is: To evolve the definition(s) of forest in the Indian context keeping international commitments and different orders of the Indian Apex court into consideration and to develop an ecologically sound and socially desirable definition of "forest".
