Martin Owen Gallagher (born 1952) is a New Zealand politician and Labour member of Parliament representing the Hamilton West electorate.
Early life
He was educated at Hamilton Boys' High School and Waikato University. He is a member of the wealthy Hamilton industrialist Gallagher family (of Gallagher Group fame).
Member of Parliament
He was first elected to Parliament in the 1993 elections, when he won the seat of Hamilton West. In the 1996 elections, however, he was defeated by National's Bob Simcock. In the 1999 elections, he won back his seat, and has retained it since. At the 2005 elections, however, he had a slender majority of 825 votes [ [http://2005.electionresults.govt.nz/electorate-16.html Official Count Results - Hamilton West ] ] 0.02% more than his opponent. He is considered to belong to the conservative faction of the Labour Party. Currently, he is Chairperson of Law and Order Select Committee and a member of Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade Select Committee.
Before standing for Parliament, he had been Deputy Mayor of Hamilton. He is a Justice of the Peace.
