Naval Network Warfare Command (NETWARCOM) is the US Navy's information operations, intelligence, networks and space unit.[1] NETWARCOM is charged with operating a secure naval network that enables information operations. As the Navy's cyber warfare force, it is the Navy's central authority for the delivery of cyber forces and capabilities to warfighters and is the commander of the Navy's service cryptologic element (SCE).

History

NETWARCOM was authorized by the Secretary of the Navy in March 2002. It was planned to begin in June 2002 but actually started 11 July 2002. The creation followed a two-year review.

NETWARCOM was constituted by setting up a command organization and combining several commands:

  • Naval Network and Space Operations Command (NNSOC) in Dahlgren, Virginia (NNSOC was formerly Naval Space Command and the Naval Network Operations Command.)
  • Fleet Information Warfare Center (FIWC) (now Navy Information Operations Command (NIOC) Norfolk) in Norfolk, Virginia
  • Naval Security Group
  • Navy Component Task Force Computer Network Defense (NCTF CND) in Washington, D.C.

The Space and Naval Warfare Systems Command (SPAWAR) reports to NETWARCOM for fleet support.

The headquarters is at Naval Amphibious Base Little Creek in Norfolk, Virginia. [2]

A magazine called InfoDomain is produced quarterly by NETWARCOM.[3]
