Irish regiment was recruited in early 1861 under the command of ColonelWilliam Haines Lytle atCincinnati, Ohio , and mustered into service for three years. The unit was organized atCamp Harrison and then moved toCamp Dennison .The regiment served in
West Virginia ,Kentucky andTennessee , taking part in theBattle of Perryville and then theBattle of Chickamauga , in which Lytle lost his life.The regiment lost during its service 3 officers and 86 enlisted men, who were killed and mortally wounded. Two officers and 77 enlisted men were lost to disease.
