Buckingham Land District is one of the twenty land districts of Tasmania which are part of the Cadastral divisions of Tasmania. It was formerly Buckingham County, one of the 18 counties of Tasmania. Buckingham county was initially proclaimed on 24 September 1804, as including all of Van Dieman's Land south of the 42nd parallel, governed by David Collins, with Cornwall to the north. [http://www.parliament.tas.gov.au/tpl/InfoSheets/Constitutional_Events.htm] [http://www.foundingdocs.gov.au/item.asp?dID=69] It was later subdivided and is became a much smaller area. It bordered to the north by the Derwent River, and to the south by the Huon River. It includes Bruny Island. Hobart is located in the county.
The 1911 Britannica mentions Hobart as being in the county. [http://www.1911encyclopedia.org/Hobart] The county name was also used on a [http://www.rootsweb.com/~austas/Buckingham4.htm post office directory] in 1890-91.
