Justice H.S.Bedi, M.A., LL.B., was born on
September 5 ,1946 . He belongs to a family of Agriculturists fromSahiwal (formerly known as Montgomery), now inPakistan . He is a descendant ofGuru Nanak , being number 17 in the direct line. His father Tikka Jagjit Singh Bedi was also a Judge of thePunjab & Haryana High Court and retired in 1969. After partition his family got settled atFazilka , a small beautiful township near Indo-Pak Border.Justice Bedi had his schooling from
Bishop Cotton School ,Shimla and did his Senior Cambridge in 1962. He was enrolled as an Advocate with the Bar Council of Punjab & Haryana onJuly 17 ,1972 and practiced in Criminal, Writ and Civil matters. He also worked as Deputy Advocate General; Additional Advocate General and Advocate General, Punjab and was designated as a Senior Advocate in 1987. He was also a part time lecturer in the Department of Laws,Panjab University ,Chandigarh from 1974-1983. He was appointed Additional Advocate General Punjab till 1989 and Advocate General Punjab for about a year ending in 1990.Justice Bedi was appointed as an Additional Judge of the Punjab & Haryana High Court on
March 15 ,1991 and permanent Judge onJuly 8 ,1992 . He was Acting Chief Justice of the Punjab & Haryana High Court on two occasions. He was appointed as the Chief Justice of theBombay High Court onOctober 3 ,2006 and a Judge ofSupreme Court of India onJanuary 12 ,2007 .
