- Thomas Hinds
Thomas Hinds (
January 9 ,1780 -August 23 ,1840 ) was a politician from theU.S. state ofMississippi .Born in
Berkeley County, Virginia (nowWest Virginia ), Hinds would later move toGreenville, Mississippi . He served as major of cavalry in theWar of 1812 and distinguished himself at theBattle of New Orleans , later being brevettedbrigadier general for gallantry.Hinds' political career began in August 1819 when he ran for
Governor of Mississippi againstGeorge Poindexter . He was soundly defeated, receiving 38% of the vote to Poindexter's 62%. Following the resignation ofWilliam Haile onSeptember 12 ,1828 , he was elected to the 20th Congress and took office onOctober 21 ,1828 . He held that position untilMarch 3 ,1831 .Hinds died on
August 23 ,1840 in "Old Greenville" (Jefferson County, Mississippi).Hinds County, Mississippi was named in his honor.Thomas was married to Laminda Green the daughter of Congressman Thomas M. Green
