- Alexander Bielaski
Alexander Bielaski (born August 10, 1811 in
Poland ; died November 7, 1861 inMississippi County, Missouri ) was acivil engineer and Captain in theUnion Army during theAmerican Civil War .Bielaski was born in Poland, and in 1831 took part in the armed
rebellion against theRussian Empire known as theNovember Uprising . After the failure of the rebellion, he was exiled toFrance , laterimmigrating to theUnited States . In 1837 he became anengineer in Illinois, where he got married and became acquainted withAbraham Lincoln . Bielaski moved toWashington, D.C. to work for theGeneral Land Office , working his way to principaldraftsman in 1853.When the Civil War began, Bielaski offered his services to Lincoln. Lincoln then appointed him with the rank of captain as
aide-de-camp to General John McClernand. Bielaski was killed on November 7, 1861 in theBattle of Belmont .Bielaski had a son,
Oscar Bielaski , who went on to become the firstPolish-American baseball player forMajor League Baseball . Bielaski's grandsonA. Bruce Bielaski was the second director of theBureau of Investigation (now theFederal Bureau of Investigation ).References
