1948 ) is ahospice caregiver, author , and the senior teacher of theSeattle Insight Meditation Society , an organization he founded in 1985. Smith was born inOhio and drafted during theVietnam War , serving inBelgium as amedic . He returned home and became asocial worker , when one evening he attended a lecture byRam Dass inCincinnati, Ohio that made him inspect his life more deeply—becoming avegetarian and doingmeditation . In 1977 he joined theInsight Meditation Society (IMS) inMassachusetts —performingmenial jobs as acook andjanitor . While at IMS he developed a desire to go deeper into hisvipassana practice, and in 1979 met the BurmeseTheravada monkMahasi Sayadaw . He chose to return with Sayadaw to Burma and was there ordained as a TheravadaBuddhist monk—studying inThailand as a monk for an additional four years. He then decided to return to lay life, sensing that themonastic life was not his particular calling. While in Thailand he read the book "Who Dies?" by Stephen Levine and decided he would like to work with the dying. He returned to IMS and met up again with Ram Dass, who helped him get to work at ahospice located inHouston, Texas . He has served in hospice settings ever since, and in 1985 he founded theSeattle Insight Meditation Society —where he serves as guiding teacher.Dimidjian, 87-88]Bibliography
