Gerald Edward Ian Maitland-Carew (born
28 December 1941 ) isLord Lieutenant ofRoxburgh, Ettrick and Lauderdale in Scotland (from March 2007), prior to which he was Depute-Lieutenant, from 1989.He is the second son of
William Conolly-Carew, 6th Baron Carew by his spouse Sylvia Gwendoline, daughter ofIan Maitland, 15th Earl of Lauderdale . As the Maitland's male entail had been broken, he inheritedThirlestane Castle through his mother, in 1971, when he also assumed the new surname of Maitland-Carew byDeed Poll . He is now trustee of both the Thirlestane Castle andMellerstain House Charitable Trust s.Educated at
Harrow School , he served in the15th/19th The King's Royal Hussars , reaching the rank ofCaptain . He is today a member of theTerritorial Army Committee, and is aBrigadier of theRoyal Company of Archers .Maitland-Carew was chairman of the
Lauderdale andGala Water Branch of the Royal British Legion Scotland between 1974 and 2004, ofMusselburgh Racecourse between 1988 and 1998 as well as of theGurkha Welfare Trust in Scotland between 1996 to 2003. For theInternational League for Protection of Horses , he was first chairman from 1999 to 2006, and is for a short time its vice-president. Since 1982, Maitland-Carew is chairman and also host of theScottish Horse Trials Championships atThirlestane Castle , and since 1989 has been a member of theJockey Club .He is married with two sons and a daughter.
An episode of the PBS series "The Story of English" devotes a segment to the Maitland family's linguistic heritage.
