- Waterloo Tunnel
The Waterloo Tunnel in
Liverpool ,England is a former railway tunnel, 862metres long, which opened in1849 . At its western end wasWaterloo Goods railway station , with the line continuing beyond this toLiverpool Riverside railway station and the dock railway system. The eastern end opens into a short cutting which connects to the Victoria Tunnel, which emerges atEdge Hill station . Both tunnels closed on19 November 1972 . It is effectively one long tunnel fromEdge Hill to Liverpool Waterloo Dock; it is unclear why they were given two different names. The tunnel passes beneath the
Northern Line (Merseyrail) about a quarter of amile north of the site of the formerLiverpool Exchange railway station .For many yearsMerseyrail have been in talks to reopen this tunnel to Edge Hill for a new line that would connect onto theCanada Dock Branch at theEdge Hill railway station area with new stations along this tunnel such as a university station and hospital. It was decided in May2007 that this plan is to go ahead.fact|date=September 2008References
