First mentioned as "St. Mary apud Ax" ["A Dictionary of London" Harben,H: London, Herbert Jenkins, 1918] , it belonged for a time to the "Priory of St Helen’s". At the time of theDissolution of the Monasteries it was still extant but in decline, and in 1562 it was offered to SpanishProtestant refugees as a place ofworship [“The Old Churches of London” Cobb,G: London, Batsford, 1942] . Three years later, however, it was unused and in a state of disrepair.
